Brief History

Japan, another name of Nippon, is very traditional country. Its history goes back more than 2000 years.
The name Nippon means the country of Sunrise. This country has been adopting the emperor system and its capital moved into several places in its history.

Tokyo, the current capital city of Japan became the biggest city in Japan approximately 400 years ago. This city was called Edo before. This country went through a national isolation with a strong central government, which was lasted about 200 years since 1600s. Kyoto was Japanese capital city before Tokyo.

It is known as the most historical city in Japan. Tons of people visit this place every year and enjoy beautiful collaboration of the modern looking city and traditional style temples and shrines built more than 1000 years ago.



The population of Japan is over 120 billion. And, Japan is mainly divided into four regions- Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

The biggest land mass is Honshu, which includes Tokyo and Osaka.
Also, Japan consists of 47 prefectures. The biggest prefecture in size is Hokkaido and smallest is Kagawa.
Although Tokyo accounts for over 10% of the population, its size is one of the smallest of all prefectures (45th).

The public transportation such as a bullet train Shinkansen that has a top speed of over 200 mph (320 km/h), metropolitan subway networks, and busses. Especially, Shinkansen is very famous and runs through Japan from the north to south.
